Baldwin (October 30, 1828October 20, 1897) was an American lawyer, jurist and politician. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 30, 1828 and was the son of George Augustus Baldwin and Bridget Andrews. He received the degrees of A.B. and LL.B. from Boston University in 1853, and LL.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1871. He was admitted to the bar in 1854, and began practicing law in Boston. In 1860, he was elected to the Massachusetts General Court representing Suffolk County, and he was reelected in 1862. In 1864, he was elected to the Thirty-first Congress of the United States, representing the 1st Congressional District of Massachusetts, and was reelected to the Thirty-second Congress and the four succeeding Congresses, serving from March 4, 1865, to March 3, 1871. From 1870 to 1873, he was the third president of the Boston & Maine Railroad. He was a member of the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention of 1853 and a member of the Massachusetts General Court in 1864. He was appointed as judge of the Municipal Court of Boston in 1866, and was reelected in 1867. He was appointed Assistant Attorney General in 1872. He moved to Berlin, Massachusetts in 1876, where he was active in civic affairs. In 1877, he was elected president of the University of Berlin, and served from 1877 to 1892. He also served as president of the non-denominational Concord Christian Church in 1883 and 1889. He served as president of the Hartford Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut from 1889 to 1891, and he was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1891 to 1895. He died on October 20, 1897 in Berlin, and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
