Drum patterns In Irish traditional music, a drum pattern is a rhythmic figure marked on a drum with the end of a stick, such as a bodhrán. Drum patterns are a primary tool of emphasis in many styles of Irish traditional music. They are used extensively to underpin, modulate, and transition between pieces. The element of percussion as part of the music's structure has had an influence on rock music, although sometimes in an erratic fashion. In more recent times, drums of all types, along with fiddles, bass guitars, and to a certain extent, keyboards, have been used in modern popular music to create a variety of genres, such as rock, punk rock, metal, country, hard rock, and electronic music. Drum kits have been added to large ensembles of percussion and electronic instruments, and individual drummers often play drums or percussion separately. They have also been used to mix and vary the time signatures of songs. This has been particularly common in punk rock, heavy metal, and rap music, with some notable examples including "The Final Countdown" by Europe, "Kickstart My Heart" by Marianne Faithfull, "Under Pressure" by Queen, and "Mama Said" by LL Cool J.
